The near-wake of a square cylinder is investigated by means of the Empirical Mode Decomposition. This processing technique is coupled to a separation criterion to extract both the coherent and the turbulent fluctuations of the
experimental time series. The performance of the extraction procedure is emphasized by analysing energy spectrum and probability density functions. The statistics of the Reynolds stresses of both the coherent and turbulent fluctuations are then reported and analysed. It is found that the properties of the coherent and turbulent fluctuations differ noticeably.
