Emerging sand dunes : from bed instability to patches
I will discuss in this presentation the physical processes at the origin of the emergence of sand dunes, from the coupling of wind flow, topography and sediment transport. I will explain why a flat sand bed is unstable, and how things change depending on the wind regime and sediment supply. I will finally present more recent results on sand deposits associated with bed heterogeneities.
This is an interdisciplinary collaborative work between geomorphologists and physicists, combining field measurements, numerical simulations, lab experiments and theoretical modelling.
