Fluid-structure interaction on flexible hydrodynamic foils

Experiment in the hydrodynamic tunnel in terms of thesis in joint french-german supervision.

Stefan Hoerner is researching possibilities to increase the power output of water turbines by a concurrent minimization of the blade loads, utilizing adaptive structures. Stefan works with numerical and experimental tools under supervision of Dominique Thévenin from the University of Magdeburg and Thierry Maître from LEGI. The research is done in the framework of his thesis titled « Characterization of the phenomenon of fluid-structure interaction on a water turbine with flexible blades ».
From the numerical side, a solver is in ongoing development in collaboration with Cyrille Bonamy, LEGI. It will allow simulations of turbines with flexible blades and is based on the foam-extend CFD library and its fluid-solid-interaction toolkit de Zeljko Tukovic, University of Zagreb. The new solver includes externally-forced motion for the solid, for strongly-coupled calculations involving large deformations of the structure.
The experiment at the hydraulic tunnel allows code validation and contributes to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of the interaction between the blade and the fluid. The experiment was installed in collaboration with Shokoofeh Abbaszadeh and Roberto Leidhold, University of Magdeburg and the instrumentation service of LEGI, Michel Riondet and Laure Vignal.
With a 6-axis load cell and time-resolved Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements, is it possible to associate the loads on the profile with the flow field in a temporal resolution of 1000 to 4000 samples per second.
The video shows the production process for the flexible foil by molding and the flow field measurements with PIV. The profile consists of a composite from milled aluminum and a carbon skeleton, surrounded by a polysiloxane body. The profiles were molded in the institute.
