Résumé/Abstract : In this first talk I will give the background to the newly opened field of global modeling of internal tides and internal gravity waves. I will discuss the components that are needed in such models—i.e. simultaneous tidal and atmospheric forcing—and will describe the fundamental technical issues involved in including tides within an ocean general circulation model.
