Vortex lenses in a stratified background

This is part of the ANR project OLA (’Ocean Layering’) aimed at understanding the processes of energy dissipation in ocean currents. Here we focus on a single vortex, as occurs for instance in the Atlantic ocean by the instabilty of the dense water current produced at the outlet of the Mediterranean Sea.

The vortex is produced by the Coriolis force acting on the flow from a source of water introduced by an injector in a fluid at rest linearly stratified in density by salinity.

Velocity fields are measured by PIV in a volume, from which the vorticity field can be obtained as shown in the figure.
