Breaking description in depth-averaged models

Depth-averaged models are one of the classic approaches for coastal wave description. Dispersive models of this type such as the fully nonlinear model of Serre-Green-Naghdi (SGN) are used in order to have a better description of wave shoaling. However, this approach has limitations since the constant velocity profile is assumed. This hypothesis is especially restrictive in breaking regions and a new derivation must be proposed. In this talk, I will present a new approach capable of treating wave breaking in the context of a depth-average model. The large-scale turbulence is explicitly resolved through an extra variable called enstrophy. This model is of mixed elliptic-hyperbolic type (as well as SGN equations) and requires an elliptical step in its numerical resolution. This work is a collaboration with G. Richard (INRAE, Grenoble).
