Titre/Title : Advances of machine learning in Earth Sciences: a subjective review

Contact : Chantal Staquet (équipe MEIGE)

Résumé/Abstract : There are a few buzzwords at the moment regarding machine learning: Artificial Intelligence, Deep Learning, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, etc. Sometimes just mentioning one of these words may help to win a grant or raise a round of funding. This situation is called hype and it should not take place in any science.
In this talk, we will discuss the basics of machine learning and all the other related buzzword approaches. We will also present our subjective review of the advances of machine learning in Earth Sciences and our view of its abilities that may be exploited in the nearest future. We will also present some of our results regarding the application of machine learning in Earth Sciences, including the flaws of the approaches we exploited.
