2017-ANNI : Vorticity Annihilation at High Reynolds Numbers

January 2017

The project aims at understanding how rapid vorticity annihilation takes place across a sharp vortical interface at high Reynolds numbers. In order to characterize this process, two distinct yet equivalent cases are contrasted. Particularly, development and annihilation of vorticity is directly compared between one case with an irrotational core and its corollary with opposite-signed vorticity across this interface.

These experiments take advantage of planar, stereo and scanning PIV measurement capabilities at the Coriolis facility in Grenoble where the tank is either rapidly started from rest or decelerated from constant rotation. The findings will be contrasted to small-scale laminar experiments that are being performed both in Karlsruhe and at Queen’s and will offer deep insight into the scaling of rapid vorticity annihilation processes over a broad range of Reynolds numbers.
