Ekman boundary layer - a local stability analysis

Manikandan Mathur 08/12/2011

The Ekman boundary layer describes fluid flow near a solid boundary in the presence of background rotation. Ekman dynamics plays a critical role in the understanding of several atmospheric and oceanic processes. Two branches of instabilities, known in the literature as Type I and Type II instabilities, lead to the formation of roll structures in the laminar Ekman layer. In this talk, I will discuss the possibility of performing a "local stabilty analysis" (equivalently the geometric optics method) on these roll structures to provide insights into the results obtained by a classical secondary stability analysis.
